On May 16, 2026, the Faculty of Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Linguistics and Cultures at the University of Languages and International Studies – Vietnam National University, Hanoi (ULIS-VNU) successfully hosted the 2026 ASEAN Culinary and Cultural Experience Day. The event drew enthusiastic participation from a large number of faculty members, students, and guests with a shared passion for Southeast Asian cultures.

The event welcomed representatives from the leadership of the Faculty of Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Linguistics and Cultures, instructors of the ASEAN Cultures, Thai B1, and Intensive Thai B2 courses, alongside native guests from various ASEAN countries. It also attracted a massive crowd of students from both within and outside the Faculty who share a keen interest in the languages and cultures of the region.

The program commenced with a series of student-led musical and dance performances that captured the distinct and vibrant cultural colors of Southeast Asian nations, instantly creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Far from being mere entertainment, these artistic showcases offered attendees a profound appreciation for the diverse cultural tapestry of the ASEAN community.

As part of the festivities, an interactive mini-game about ASEAN garnered enthusiastic responses from the students. Trivia questions covering the culture, history, geography, and unique characteristics of Southeast Asian countries not only ignited high spirits but also allowed students to reinforce their knowledge and deepen their understanding of the ASEAN community in an engaging and dynamic way.

A major highlight of the event was the immersive experience of the Baci (wrist-tying) ceremony – a beautiful, time-honored cultural tradition of Laos, which left a lasting impression on everyone present. In Laotian culture, this sacred ritual is performed to invoke blessings for good luck, health, peace, and happiness. The white threads tied around the wrists not only convey heartfelt wishes but also symbolize profound connection, love, and community spirit. This hands-on activity offered students a rare, deep dive into the spiritual life and traditional values of Laos.

Following the ceremony, students and guests gathered to savor signature dishes from various ASEAN nations. This culinary journey provided a warm space for networking while allowing participants to explore the fascinating nuances of Southeast Asian gastronomy.

The event concluded on a high and joyful note, leaving wonderful memories in the hearts of all attendees. The 2026 ASEAN Culinary and Cultural Experience Day not only enriches the academic environment at ULIS but also reaffirms the crucial role of experiential learning in elevating educational quality and fostering cultural exchange within the student community.
