Seminar on “Sharing Experiences in Teaching Vietnamese and Learning Foreign Languages”:Career Orientation and Inspiration for Students of the Faculty of Vietnamese Language and Culture and Southeast Asian Studies

On November 29, 2025, at Vũ Đình Liên Hall, the Faculty of Vietnamese Language and Culture and Southeast Asian Studies, University of Languages and International Studies – Vietnam National University, Hanoi (ULIS), organized the seminar entitled “Sharing Experiences in Teaching Vietnamese and Learning Foreign Languages.” The event attracted strong interest and enthusiastic participation from students who are passionate about teaching Vietnamese and learning foreign languages.

The seminar featured contributions from Dr. Đỗ Phương Thảo, Lecturer at Hanoi National University of Education, and M.A. Nguyễn Mai Phương, Lecturer of the Faculty of Vietnamese Language and Culture and Southeast Asian Studies, ULIS. The event was also attended by Dr. Trần Hữu Trí, Dean of the Faculty, together with all faculty members and students of the Faculty.

Shaping the pathway to becoming a teacher of Vietnamese as a foreign language

At the seminar, Dr. Đỗ Phương Thảo delivered a presentation entitled Becoming a Teacher of Vietnamese as a Foreign Language,” offering students a comprehensive and practical overview of a profession that is gaining increasing importance in the context of international integration.

Her presentation focused on several key issues, including the reasons for choosing Vietnamese language teaching as a career in a globalized world; the essential qualities, knowledge, and skills required of teachers; characteristics of contemporary learners of Vietnamese; commonly used teaching materials and textbooks; and effective approaches to designing and delivering lessons in Vietnamese as a foreign language.

Through this presentation, students not only gained valuable professional knowledge but also developed a clearer understanding of potential career pathways, from strengthening subject-matter expertise and pedagogical skills to building confidence in their future career choice in education.

Sharing experiences in foreign language learning and inspiring academic motivation

Continuing the program, M.A. Nguyễn Mai Phương presented on the topic The Journey of Exploring Foreign Languages and Common Misconceptions in Foreign Language Learning.” Drawing from her own experiences in learning and teaching, she identified common misunderstandings in the language learning process and emphasized the importance of adopting the right learning mindset, highlighting learner autonomy, passion, and long-term perseverance as key factors for success.

Her sincere, relatable, and inspiring sharing helped motivate students in their academic journeys in general and in their pursuit of foreign language proficiency in particular.

Enhancing dialogue and providing development orientation for students

The seminar received active engagement from students, who raised numerous questions and participated in lively discussions related to the teaching profession, foreign language learning methods, and future career choices and development.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Trần Hữu Trí, Dean of the Faculty of Vietnamese Language and Culture and Southeast Asian Studies, offered insightful guidance to students. He emphasized students’ important role in promoting Vietnamese cultural values to the world in an accurate, responsible, and in-depth manner. He also reaffirmed that learning foreign languages is a long-term journey requiring diligence, perseverance, and continuous effort, noting that there are no shortcuts to success.

Following the seminar, many students expressed their enthusiasm and appreciation for the program’s practical value. Student Đường Kiều Anh shared: “After the seminar, I have a clearer understanding of the teaching profession and the importance of perseverance in learning foreign languages. The lecturers’ sharing has given me greater motivation and clearer direction for my future.”

Promoting academic values and inspiring career aspirations

The seminar concluded in a positive and meaningful atmosphere with a group photo session. Beyond providing useful academic knowledge, the event contributed to inspiring learning motivation and supporting career orientation for students of the Faculty of Vietnamese Language and Culture and Southeast Asian Studies. The University and the Faculty look forward to organizing more seminars on practical topics in the future, with the aim of enhancing training quality and supporting students in their long-term professional development.
